Reflective Practice / Professional Development Group

Reflective Practice / Professional Development Group for Therapists & Psychological Practitioners

Working as a therapist in private practice can be a lonely position – without colleagues to share work experiences or staff rooms in which to meet on a daily basis. On the other hand practitioners who work within stressful organizational contexts may find it equally difficult to access the kind of professional support they need.

This group offers a safe place for reflective practice – an opportunity to talk about complex cases; your experience of your role, approaches to therapeutic formulation and intervention, clinical dilemmas and ways that you might get stuck. Where clinical supervision might look at individual cases, this group seeks to give you a space in which to step back and examine your professional and therapeutic relationships, and identify any themes or recurring issues.  It is our felt responses that make the work come alive and yet at the same time create the counter transference vulnerabilities which can lead to tensions and blocks in how we work.

The group will also focus on professional development: to include your immediate CPD needs, skills development and training options, alongside longer term strategies for developing your practice and career.

How the group works: The group will comprise between 3 and 6 members. There will be an opportunity to talk about your work and professional self, to present dilemmas and to receive feedback from colleagues based on their professional experience as well as more immediate associations to the material you present. The group does not seek to provide therapy but does aim to enable you to better understand any areas in your work where you feel blocked, anxious or frustrated. It is also a chance to compare notes with other practitioners as to how they might experience the work and how they manage the various tensions inherent in a helping role. It is anticipated that between them group members will bring experience of a range of therapeutic approaches including psychodynamic, systemic, cognitive and humanistic.
