The benefits of online therapy

The Benefits of Talking therapies and Counselling Online

Online Counselling has been growing in popularity over the past few years, it’s easy to see why – it’s convenient, provides instant access and can take place at a place and time that works for you.

Technology is part of our everyday lives and that’s not just millennials. More and more of us are seeking advice and support for Mental Health using a wide range of apps, social media sites, blogs and talking therapies offered by Zoom and the other life video platforms.

With the NHS mental health services overstretched, Covid-19 has certainly accelerated this trend as we are seeing many of our clients are requesting to continue their therapy online even as our centre plans to re-open. Our practitioners have enjoyed being able to continue their work through this period and many are planning to adopt a dual approach going forward – offering a choice to clients of either face-to-face or online appointments or a combination of the two.

Online counselling can bring positive benefits to the relationship between a client and their therapist. One advantage can be a disinhibition effect, where people feel more comfortable opening up and discussing problems when they are taking remotely in the comfort of their own surroundings. But there can be concerns about the varying quality of online therapy and the security of the patient’s data.

“Counsellor” and “psychotherapist” are not protected titles, though there are a number of accredited registers, such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which indicates that therapists are qualified. At Brighton Therapy Centre, all of our therapists and counsellors are accredited and we strive to be a centre of clinical excellence. All of our therapists are selected through a rigorous assessment process. Since Covid 19, we have coached and guided our therapists to be able to undertake appropriate online counselling.
